'twas the week after Christmas

The week after Christmas wore me out, in a very lovely way.

Here's what we were doing in addition to hanging out at my mom's for long portions of the day to visit and play with family:

Monday
:: Made the biggest impulse buy of my life (just needed a little encouragement from Rachel!)
:: Family pictures
:: Dinner with 26/28 family members at Blue Adobe Grill
:: Hazel's birthday (and party)

Tuesday
:: Visit with sisters
:: Ah-SO with the married siblings in town and mom and dad (Jason stayed home with the kids)
:: Sherlock Holmes with Kathryn, Angela & Clint, Don & Rachel and Jason

Wednesday
:: Say bye to Don, Daniel & Steven
:: Try out Cafe Mix with Rachel
:: Get ready for and host get together with high school friends
:: Sleepover at Grandma's for grandkids

Thursday
:: Laid in bed with my computer while Hazel napped since Clara was gone
:: Target for Clara to use her "credit card" (aka Target gift card)
:: Midnight in Paris with Jason and Rachel

Friday
:: Drive to North Phoenix so my dad could take his ladies out to lunch
:: Drive to Summit at South Mountain (I can't believe I've never been up there)
Saturday
:: Scottsdale Train Park
:: LGO with Angela, Clint and Rachel
:: New Year's Eve party at Ryan and Kathryn's (where someone {who invited the tiger?} was really, really excited about the firework going off)
Jason had the entire week off. When we weren't doing something with our family, he watched the kids, cleaned the house and let me run wild with my sisters. It was so nice going out to eat and being able to visit, going to my mom's while Hazel got to stay home to get a much needed nap and staying late to visit while he took the kids home and put them to bed. Isn't he great?

28 and Counting

When I found out Rachel and her family, Daniel and Steven were all coming for Christmas, I decided we had to find a way to convince Emily and her entire family to come as well. After I went to the Post Office and realized how expensive her package would cost to send, I decided to beg more and pray harder. It worked and for the first time in over 5 years, my entire family was together. 2 parents, 9 children, 5 in-laws and 12 grandchildren. Of course we talked a lot. Of course we ate. Of course we took pictures. And OF COURSE, the family pictures didn't turn out perfectly like I envisioned. But hey, we were all together and here's a picture to prove it.Are family pictures really as painful as many of these faces indicate? Clara was slouching and hunched over in most of the pictures. In one, she was bending her knees. Not sure what was going on in her little head. Hazel was only not looking in a few pictures - this is one of them. Oh well, I'm pretty sure Kathryn can work her Photoshop magic to fix all the problems in the least problematic picture. This picture required the least amount of editing and still offered the general idea of how awesome my family is. The picture isn't perfect, but being all together was. Besides, I thought our outfits all coordinated rather nicely. That should count for something, right?

Hazel Turns 1

Shortly after Hazel was born, time flew by. The first three months of her life were gone in the blink of an eye. It scared me and was such a huge contrast to Clara. Having just Clara for so long allowed me to enjoy each and every day, make so many memories and not mourn the passing of time. Adding Hazel changed that. When Hazel was about 3 months old, I decided we needed to stop sitting around and start enjoying life. We did and it helped to make the rest of her first year of life fulfilling, rewarding and gave me adequate time to cherish her. We've had family time, one-on-one time, girl time and daddy time. It seems as long as I make sure to live in the moment and not the future or the past, it's easier to deal with the passing of each phase. Yes, she's growing, but as I try to enjoy each day, then we make memories that we can always hold dear even as we venture to the next stage.

For Hazel's birthday, my entire (ENTIRE!) family was here. I decided that's just another reason to keep having my babies in December - there's a good chance we'll have family in town to help celebrate. After the big dinner out with my family, we came back to our house for a hot chocolate bar and dessert (mini coconut cupcakes, lemon bites and chocolate peppermint thumbprint cookies). I made Jason hang the puff balls and admitted it was just for the pictures. Unfortunately, I had him hang them too high and it was dark so the picture quality is rather poor. Oh well, we didn't really have the option of doing it during the day, but you better believe I considered it just so my pictures would look better. Ha ha. I had Rachel take some and then forgot to get them from her before she left. Anyway. Back to the party. Hazel loved the cake (not surprising) and ate until I took it away from her worried she'd swipe it off the tray. She just stared at everyone singing to her and wanted to grab the candle. I made another mini cake like I did for Clara and wished I would have frosted it differently because it looked really, really cute until I frosted it.Now for a bit about my little sweetie. She has 8 teeth. The 8th one came in a few days before Christmas. She doesn't teeth well so it will be interesting to see what she's like when the molars and canines start coming in. Other than that, she is a really, really good baby. If she misses a nap, she's manageable. She pretty much only cries if she is super starving and/or super, duper tired. And then usually it's not even a cry, but a yell.

I was so worried she'd be forced to be quite and not talk much because of the other talkers we have in this house. I'm happy to say I think she will talk sooner than Clara did and is not afraid to interrupt, contribute to conversations and voice her opinion. She is really good at repeating/mocking the noises Jason and I make. She says "dog" and "duck". They sound the same, but she says it when she sees either of them. She waves "bye" in her lazy, flapping style and says "bye" too. She claps for "more" and raises her hands in the air to sign "finished".

She is into throwing things. Hard. On Christmas Even, she would shake things than let them drop. It was hilarious because I could tell she was trying to throw the objects, she just couldn't time the letting go part right. In the last week, she's figured it out and can throw really good. She's also into throwing fits. A few days ago she started throwing her head back, arching her back and flailing all over the place when she doesn't get her way. It's often accompanied by a super high pitched screech that she does every now and then. One time it was in Costco and lasted about 30 seconds. I just sat and stared at her and tried not to laugh.

I nursed her 4 times a day until a few days before her birthday. On her birthday, we started just morning and night feedings. It hasn't been hard for either of us. However, I'm worried she has a dairy, or other food, sensitivity. Plus she doesn't really like milk. I just don't know what the best alternative is. Beyond that, she eats almost anything I put in front of her. With her expanded diet, she has gotten a little more picky, but more so when it comes to spices. For instance, she used to eat plain beans all the time. Now she eats them, but only if they have some type of spice or are in Quinoa salad or something like that.

The other day I thought she was in the kitchen by the sink and my heart sunk for a split second when I turned the corner to get her because I didn't see her on the floor. Of course I realized in the next split second that she had climbed inside the cupboard.See? There she is.She loves to explore and climb in things. As long as she's not hurting herself, someone else or something, I don't mind what she does.

When she was younger, she'd gently bop to music. Now, she moves back and forth pretty aggressively when she hears music. I think I could see it 100 times and still laugh at it.

I wish this picture wasn't so dark because it's hard to capture Hazel's big smile. It is so sweet!This is her stare, which is easy to capture since she does it often.Hazel's favorite things to do is most definitely undo anything and everything. For a few days, I took pictures of her destruction. This is what goes on at our house all day every day.Jason doesn't remember Clara doing this, but I think there are two explanations for that. One, he wasn't really around. He was gone all the time between work and school. But also, in our last house, I shut all the doors and let her crawl all around the halls so there was less for her to get into. I think she was still busy and curious, I was just able to keep things off limits easier.

Hazel still just crawls and doesn't seem to be interested in standing on her own or walking. She seems to be a bit uncoordinated and will sometimes crawl faster than she can handle and face plant into the ground over her hands. Because she's so mellow, it was really hard for me to recognize her personality when she was younger. Now it's starting to be much more obvious and I just love watching her and observing how she explores everything endlessly.

I often ponder and think about what a perfect fit Hazel is to our family. I'm glad she's the second, I'm glad she came when she did and I'm glad she is so unique and has a personality just as lovable as Clara. Here's to another fun, memorable year with this happy little girl

Projects

We have a large closet in our family room where we store movies and blankets. Clara goes in it a lot and one time asked me to read her a book in there. I got the idea to turn the bottom part into a reading closet for Clara's birthday. She loved the idea, so the night before her birthday, I acted as the general contractor and subbed the work out to Jason. :) He removed the bottom shelf and painted the walls. Yes, that's a doggy bed acting as the cushion. Admit it, the idea is brilliant! It was cheap, it's huge (and the perfect size) and has a machine washable cover. Anyway, I have a few more details to add so hopefully I remember to take a picture when I'm done. It's already gotten a lot of use.I've been getting $10 off coupons from Kohl's for the last several months so I would go, find things totaling near $10 and get free things. I wanted to make a necklace for Clara so one time I found some bracelets that I restrung. I wanted to make Hazel some baby leg warmers, so one time I got some cute socks. I was happy with how both projects turned out and even happier they were free.For Clara and Hazel's big Christmas present, we decided to fix up an old wooden kitchen set we have had sitting in our garage for quiet some time - 2 years? Anyway, of course we procrastinated. On Christmas Eve, we decided not to paint it... and then I decided that'd be really sad if we put the haggard looking thing out for our girls on Christmas morning. So at 10:30pm, we decided to paint. I washed and peeled contact paper off while Jason painted. He continued to paint while I took care of other Christmas Eve tasks inside. We planned on doing white, but he accidentally opened the gray we painted our family room with and I decided to just roll with the gray. I am SO happy we painted and I really love how the gray looks with the pewter knobs. Not to mention we had everything but the long pull and the white tub I used for the sink, so the total project was less than $5.

Snowflake

We planned on going to Snowflake for the Penrod party on Friday evening. Jason got suckered into a meeting Friday afternoon so he couldn't get off early. I wasn't looking forward to driving all that way for such a short trip, but we thought it was important to go spend time with Jason's family. The day before, there was a storm and the roads were bad so we decided not to go. Clara was so mad. On Friday, when Jason got out of his meeting a little after 1pm, we decided to go since the roads had cleared significantly. Jason rushed home, we packed and we drove up to Snowflake and surprised his family. We visited, had a white elephant exchange, ate and then left to go put our sleepy kids to bed (at Michelle's, of course) well after bed time. All 13 Penrod grandkids. How cute.Saturday after breakfast, we made one quick stop at Aunt Janet's and then headed home to clean our house in preparation for Rachel. It was a super fast trip, but Clara was happy to see and play with cousins and I got to see so many beautiful things. I loved seeing the Rim covered in snow and the icicles around town.I did not love having to go outside when it was 9*. Way too cold for me.I told Clara not to breath outside or her lungs would freeze. They would, right? :)

'twas the month before Christmas...

You knew it was coming, the question was when? Now! Now is when I begin my massive catch up from the last month. The whole month of December was busy but I have been especially busy this last week playing all day every day with Rachel and her family. You'll get the full update on that later. Right now, let's rewind to the beginning of December.

I loved having a paper chain to count down to Christmas with activities on each link last year, so we did it again this year. I tried to have it coincide with parties and things we were already planning to try to keep it simple and of course, we ended up having to switch things around a bit. We didn't get a few things done, but we added a few activities to make up for it, which made for a great month. Last year we only had one service thing on the list and we didn't even do it. This year, we made sure to have more service and that we actually did it.

Here's our list (we didn't get the chain made until a few days into December)...
1. Make the chain!2. Set up & decorate the tree3. Make a snowman (we watched a movie instead)
4. Watch the First Presidency Christmas devotional
5. Write Santa letter (never got sent - so we sent it in a text, ha ha)
6. Sunshine Acres (we "adopted" a boy and went to their Christmas program to watch all the kids receive and open their gifts - I hope this becomes a tradition. Except I hope Jason working late and missing it does not stay as part of the tradition)
7. Make snowflakes8. Service
9. Movie night
10. Christmas stories
11. Temple lights
12. Read and talk about Luke 2
13. Activity in the Friend magazine
14. Visit Santa at Bass Pro15. Craft (I don't think we made a single craft... we took lots of walks and drank lots of hot chocolate instead)16. Neighbor gifts - I think I'm going to do Martinelli's every year. Affordable, easy and everyone loves it. Clara and I made the reindeer for the card/tag. Well, I made the big head with my fingerprint and I let Clara draw the antlers. Oh! I guess we did do one craft. Then I had her sign "The Penrods". She left the d out of all but one and on several of them messed up so started over at the top of the paper. It was cute.17. The Ward party (which was really funny)/Clara's party (which I already told you all about)18. Make and eat cookies
19. Craft
20. Service
21. Dinner for Clara's birthday - this ended up being chicken noodle soup and bread at my mom's. Jason worked late and Clara wanted to eat Kathryn's soup rather than McDonald's so we did. We went to Taco Bell the next night, without Jason, since he ended up working late that night too (and pretty much every single night the two weeks before Christmas. More on that later.)
22. Ice Skating - didn't happen. I'm hoping next year or maybe in the next few months we can go. I was really excited to go with Clara.
23. Look at Christmas lights (this happened the next night). Instead, we drove to Snowflake for the Penrod Christmas party and let Clara "play in the snow" the next day. By "play in the snow" I mean I made her go stand in the snow with a strained "smile" for a picture. Later she decided she wanted to play in the snow, but it was too late so we'll hopefully do that some time in January.
24. Grandma & Grandpa Melzer's to hear Wally. My dad tells it every year. I love it. This year he also told us a really neat story about his Uncle Jack, who was a fireman in Chicago (I think it was Chicago?). Anyway, one year close to Christmas he responded to a call where a baby was stuck in a house. While he waited for someone to get to him and the baby (I can't remember why he couldn't get out by himself) he took his mask off and proceeded to suck the smoke out of the baby's lungs into his own. They were rescued and although he spent a week in the hospital, including Christmas, both him and the baby survived. I look forward to my dad's stories every year.After the stories, my dad drove every around in his truck to look at lights and carolAfter my parent's, I put the kids to bed in their cute matching pj's
